HCRGSA 2025 Graduate Conference Call for Papers

Update:

The final call for papers is now January 14th 2025. If you have not yet submitted an abstract and would like to, please do so by this date. We cannot offer a longer extension, as we need to ensure that the chosen presenters are confirmed and announced no later than the third week of January.

We are additionally excited to announce that as part of our conference we will be featuring a roundtable seminar hosted by Dr. Timur Mukhamatulin, and Dr. Stephanie Dennie on how to navigate the job market as a new graduate! We are very much looking forward to being able to share their insights with you.

The History, Classics, and Religion Graduate Students' Association (HCRGSA) at the University of Alberta invites graduate students to submit papers for the upcoming conference on the theme “Connected World: A Global Perspective on Historical Interactions.” This conference will take place from February 27th to March 1st, 2025, in Edmonton, Alberta, in a hybrid format (allowing for both in-person and virtual participation).

Conference Theme: The theme of this conference, Connected World, offers a framework that emphasizes the interconnection, exchanges, networks, and interactions that have shaped global historical processes, transcending traditional boundaries such as national borders. We welcome submissions that engage with a range of sub-themes, including but not limited to:

  • Transregional and Transcultural Exchanges

  • Global Networks of Trade and Communication

  • Empire and Colonialism

  • Migration and Diasporas

  • Global Crises and Responses

  • Revolution and Resistance

  • War and Conflict

  • Gender, Class, and Social Hierarchies

We encourage the submission of papers that address Global and Connected Histories, with particular interest in research emphasizing the historical interconnectedness of regions, societies, and cultures. Submissions on related topics are also welcome from graduate students across a wide range of academic disciplines, including but not limited to History, Classics, Religious Studies, Indigenous Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Linguistics, Anthropology, English, Political Science, Economics, Cultural Studies, Disability Studies, and Gender Studies.

Submission Guidelines: Each presentation should be no longer than 20 minutes, followed by a Q&A session. Abstracts of up to 250 words along with a brief biography must be submitted no later than January 1st, 2025. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by mid-January 2025.

Accepted papers will have the opportunity to be published in Past Imperfect, the graduate student journal of the Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta, subject to the presenter’s submission. A limited number of travel awards (up to $250 CAD) and a best abstract award (valued at $100 CAD) will be available to eligible participants. Please submit your abstract via this link.
